What are allergens?
-
Some foods can cause severe allergic reactions in some people - this is known as anaphylaxis. Foods such as peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. cashews, almonds, walnuts), shellfish, finned fish, milk, eggs, sesame and soybeans and their products may cause severe allergic reactions and must be declared on labels or available to customers. Gluten is also included in this list as a caution for those with coeliac disease.
In addition, foods containing sulphites must be labelled as containing sulphites if they have 10 milligrams per kilogram or more of added sulphites. This is the level that may trigger asthma attacks in some asthmatics.

-
Does Bakers Delight bake gluten / wheat free breads?
-
Bakers Delight use wheat based flour, therefore all products contain gluten.
Unfortunately Bakers Delight is unable to make gluten or wheat free bread because of the chance of cross contamination between products.
-
Does Bakers Delight bake yeast free products?
-
Yeast is an important part of bread making. It ferments sugars and produces a gas which enables the bread to rise.
Bakers yeast is an ingredient in all products made at Bakers Delight the only exceptions being scones and our Authentic Sourdough.
The Authentic Sourdough products are made using traditional bread making methods. This means that the Authentic Sourdough doesn't contain any bakers yeast; it is made using a culture of wild yeasts and bacteria which naturally occur in the air and flour. The culture continually ferments in flour and water and is used each time the sourdough is baked.
-
Do Bakers Delight bake breads containing animal fats or products?
-
Many breads contain ham, bacon, eggs, cheese, milk and butter including the savoury Pullaparts, rolls, scones, croissants and danishes. Some products do not contain any animal products including Bakers Delight Traditional range and the majority of fruit breads.
Bakers Delight suppliers indicate that all emulsifiers used in products are vegetable based excluding the rennet in cheese, which may be derived from animals or vegetables.
-
Do any Bakers Delight products contain Genetically Modified ingredients?
-
Bakers Delight is happy to advise that none of our products contain genetically modified ingredients. We work with our suppliers to ensure that all ingredients supplied to Bakers Delight comply with our GM policy.
-
What about the Greenpeace GE Free True Food Guide - why is Bakers Delight in the 'red' category?
-
The Greenpeace GE Free True Food Guide has extensive criteria that are over and above that required by food standards.
For example, to be included in the green category, evidence that animal products used have not derived from those fed on GM stock feed is required. Unfortunately this is very difficult to trace and therefore Bakers Delight are unable to meet this specific criterion.
Bakers Delight products continue to be in line with Australia/New Zealand food standards.
